The Ball

I pumped up my running and fitness training big time; any spare time or afternoons I had I was running, boxing, or at the gym. I was determined to get through training at top fitness, and I wanted to be in top shape to take on whatever I might be assigned to next. I didn’t know how I was going to find my mother now but if I was to take on other demons, I needed to be ready. I still couldn’t believe Cayden he hides knowing my mother was alive and maybe a demon then wants us to be together!

I jumped out of the shower, three weeks to go ‘til graduation, and now it was time to get ready for the Police Ball.

Jayla had kindly agreed to do my makeup. This was a first for me, and I wasn’t the best at sitting still.

“Stay still Angie, or I’ll end up poking your eye out,” she said. “Didn’t you go to a prom at school?”

“Nah, wasn’t my scene. Ow!”

“I did say stay still. Your eye is watering now—let me fix your mascara.”

“Are we almost done?”

“Yes, just your lips. I told my parents you’re coming, so look out for them. They’re nice, so if you need a comfort zone, use them, okay?”

“Thanks, Jay, that was nice of you.”

“Okay, hold your lips at a pucker like this.” She puckered up her lips, and I laughed.

“What?” she asked, grinning. “That’s how it’s done. Okay, just hold still, there. Okay, phew, done. Check out my amazing work in the mirror.”

I turned around and was speechless. My eyes welled up.

“Oh no you don’t; don’t you dare wreck my masterpiece now!”

“Wow Jay, you’re amazing. You should think about a career change.”

“I’m just working with you, Angie. You’re beautiful you know.”

I gave her a huge hug. “Thank you.”

“Okay, that’s enough of that,” she said, her eyes also welling up. “I’m sure Reggie and the limo are waiting.”

She was right—I went downstairs and Reggie was there, ready to go.

“Wow! Is that you, White Wing?”

“You look very handsome yourself, Reggie.”

“It took me so long to polish my shoes, but I knew my father would notice those first,” he said. “Do my pants look too tight?” He did a little spin, grinning.

I laughed. “The dress uniform suits you. Wow, your shoes are crazy shiny; I can see my reflection. You have to give me some tips on doing mine before graduation.”

He smiled. “Let’s go, the limo is here.” He held his arm out.

We arrived at the Police Commissioner’s house. Many limos and expensive cars were dropping off people.

“Ready?” Reggie asked.

I took a deep breath. “Yes, I am.”

Reggie hopped out first and offered his arm.

There were photographers at the ready, taking pictures, and there was even a little red carpet to guide people in.

“Is it always like this?” I asked, shielding my eyes from all of the flashes going off.

“Yes. It’s only the elite families in society who come to this. And for some, it’s the only event they go to so it’s a rare opportunity for the press to get their pictures.
